Student Rosters and Dropout Surveys, 1938–1941

This series contains student rosters as well as dropout surveys. The rosters list students by sex and thereunder alphabetically by surname. A typical entry notes age, class, Indian blood by tribe and degree, home address, Indian agency, and religion. There are also lists titled "NYA Roster" and "Wigwam Roster." The dropout surveys are separated by sex and document all classes from level eight through twelve. Each lists dropouts alphabetically by surname and gives age, intelligence quotient (IQ), tribe, degree of Indian blood, date of dropping out, address, and remarks concerning the cause for leaving the school.

The Sherman Institute was established in 1900, as a successor to the Perris Indian School (Perris, Calif.), after the water supply to the previous school was deemed insufficient. By 1901 a site in the city of Riverside was selected, at the corner of Magnolia Avenue and Jackson Street. On July 19, 1901, the cornerstone was laid for the new school building of Sherman Institute, and the school officially opened on September 9, 1902.
